The words milli, centi, and deci come from the Latin language which in the English langue represent the prefix of the lower denominations. milli represents (.001), centi represents (.01) and deci represents (.1). All these are from the Metric System. The Metric system is pretty much based off of the meter system. A millimeter is one thousandth of a meter, a centigram is one hundredth of a gram; and a deciliter is one tenth of a liter. Here are the units of the other measures which are derived in a simple manner from the meter. The Meter is the unit of Length. The Ar is the unit of Land Measure. The Liter is the unit of capacity. The Gram is the unit of Weight.

The Meter is the unit of length. It is the base of the Metric System,
and is very near to one-tenth million (.0000001) part of the Quadrant
extending through Paris from the equator through Pole. |
The names of the Higher Denomination are formed by Prefixing to the unit the Greek numerals Deka (10), Hekto (100), Kilo (1000), and Myria (10000). For example: A dekameter is 10 Meters; A Hektoliter is one-hundred liters. A Kilogram is one-thousand grams; And Myriameter is ten-thousand meters.
