Alexander Berry

Alexander Berry was born November 30, 1781 he was a Scottish explorer. In 1822 he was given 10,000 acres of landto create the first European settlement on the south coast of New South Wales, Australia. This became known as the Coolangatta Estate. Years later it was called the town of Berry, it was called that becuase of the greatness of Alexander and his brother David. Alexaners father was named James and his mother Isabel he was born at Hilltarvit Mains farmhouse. It was a snow storm that day and even St. Andrews day. He was taught at Cupar Grammar school. And studied medicine at St Andrews University and Edinburgh University before he became a surgeon for the East India Company. He decided to quit being a surgeon. In 1806 he drove ships, He went to  'City of Edinburgh', with partner Francis Short, and made several voyages to New South Wales, and also to South America. He died on 30 November, 1873 at Crows Nest House, leaving his estate to his brother David, He had no children.
