James Hoban

Many people do not know who James Hoban was he born 1758 December. He was an Irishman and was known for designing the White House in Washington DC. James Hoban was raised at Cuffesgrange,  in Co Kilkenny he learned carpentry. He also studied architecture at the Royal Dublin Society.  In 1792, James won the competition to design the presidents house, later known as the White House. At the time of the American Revolutionary War, James went to the United States, and became an architect in Philadelphia in 1781. James then went to South Carolina in 1792, and designed some buildings the main one was the statehouse in Columbia.
James lived the rest of his life in Washington DC where he worked on other buildings. He also designed Rossenarra House in Kilkenny, Ireland in 1824.
James wife's name was Susanna Hoban. James son was a member of the Jesuit community. James died in Washington DC on December 8, 1831.
